HM prison Wormwood Scrubs is the latest reality TV location as it will be seen in a documentary in two parts that examines life in the famous West London institution. According to ITV they have been given never before seen access to one of the world’s largest and arguably ‘hardest‘ prisons.
The jail is home to nearly 1300 prisoners and the documentary will display the real-life frustration, stress and anger that surrounds day-to-day prison life. They will look at many different types of inmates including drug addicts, all kinds of petty villains and heavyweight organised criminals who call the Scrubs home.
The documentary will also look into the prison from the point of view of the staff who have to battle daily with all kinds of violence and deliberate provocation from the prisoners, as well as deal with daily disruption, and even suicide attempts.
The governor of Wormwood Scrubs Phil Taylor states that his prison is like a smouldering volcano just waiting to boil over. He says that many of his guests are poorly educated and often illiterate, or may have never had a real job outside of crime in their entire lives.
Some of the prisoners are very young, and the governor is adamant that he wants to work with them in order to avoid them progressing through the ranks into serious full-time professional criminals.
The show will emphasise the true nature of prison life as we see how cigarettes have been replaced by mobile phones and hard drugs as a currency of choice behind bars. He will also show how prisoners manage to make lethal weapons from almost any object.
ITV say this is a no holds barred account of prison life never seen before on British screens.
