A collection of 150 short films that warn people of hazards that are faced every day such as crossing a road are enjoying surprisingly large sales on DVD.
The public information films have animated characters instructing viewers such as the Green Cross Code, Charley the Cat, and Tufty the Squirrel.
Head of marketing at the Central Office of Information, Jackie Huxley, stated that the films have a very strong nostalgia about them for most people, which is probably responsible for the large numbers of sales.
The short films were originally filmed to fill in blocks of television that were empty and quickly became associated with Saturday morning television viewing.
Last week, Network Video put 2,000 editions of the DVD compilation on the market and in just one week there are only one hundred left.
In fact, the animated characters that frame the shorts to appeal to a young audience were so recognizable that the band Prodigy, even enjoyed a top ten hit that was inspired by the character of Charley.
Many established stars also took part in the safety films such as Rolf Harris, Jimmy Savile, and Jon Pertwee from Dr. Who.
Manager of NetworkVideo, Tim Beddows, said he came across the old cartoons and decided to approach the COI about releasing them. As a result, over 22,000 copies have already been sold.
The fact that they sold so well was surprising to Beddows and the COI. Beddows remembers the films fondly stating that he has a favorite character as most adults do, Jo and Petunia.
