Favourite TV Catchphrases

A survey by meccabingo.com customers has found that “Can I have a P please Bob” from the iconic TV gameshow Blockbusters has been voted the best catchphrase in a new survey, voted by 23 per cent of respondents.

Next in line were “Look at what you could have won” from Jim Bowen and “say what you see” from Roy Walker coming in joint second with 16% of the votes. Anne Robinson’s infamous “You ARE the weakest link” proved not so weak by coming in fourth with 14% of the votes.

While Bob Holness’ catchphrase may be king, when it comes to favourite game show hosts, Noel Edmonds is at the head of the pack, polling 30% of the votes. Bruce Forsyth foxtrots into second place with 22% and Jim Bowen just misses the bull’s-eye with 13% of the votes. Bob Holness is in joint fourth place with Vic ‘n’ Bob who proved not to be such shooting stars, polling 9% of the votes.

In a nod to nostalgia, the survey also asked which 80s game show would customers like to see back on TV in the original format. Proving that re-makes aren’t always better, 44% of customers called for the return of Blockbusters while 25% wanted 3-2-1 and Dusty Bin back on the screens. Other popular shows included Give Us a Clue with 15% of the votes and Sale of the Century with 14%. It seems that Every Second Doesn’t Count as the game show polled just 2% of the votes.

Commenting on the research findings, Angus Nisbet, director of gaming at meccabingo.com said, “Everyone remembers the tongue in cheek questions from the original Blockbusters so it’s no surprise that our customers have voted Can I have a P please Bob as their favourite. The programme really was cult viewing back in the 80s and Bob was quick to respond to the double entendre requests so it’s no surprise people want to see the original back on our TV screens.”

The research was carried out following the exclusive launch of Blockbuster Bingo on the meccabingo.com website. Just like the TV version, the games use letters instead of numbers unlike traditional bingo games.
