The ITV programme, along with Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, was recognised for the work of Elizabeth McGovern for Outstanding Lead Actress for a series and Dame Maggie Smith for Outstanding Supporting Actress for Miniseries. But nothing is certain since there is great competition in with Mildred Pierce and The Kennedys as well as other great shows in Outstanding Miniseries or Movie.

There are other British stars that were nominated such as Cat Deeley for Outstanding Host For a Realty Show or Competition for So You Think You Can Dance. For Outstanding Lead Actor for a Drama, Hugh Laurie was nominated for House and for his role in Luther Idris Elba was also nominated.

For Lead Actress in Movie or Miniseries Jean Marsh was nominated for the character she played in Upstairs Downstairs and for Outstanding Supporting Actress Eileen Atkins was also nominated. For the Good Wife and Alan Cummings was included in the nominations.

Mad Men was among the shows that received a number of nominations with 19 for their drama about the 1960s and its changes. However the series that lead the pack with 21 nominations was Mildred Pierce of HBO that stars Kate Winslet.

The most nominated sitcom was last year’s winner Modern Family with 17 nominations. Other shows that led with nominations were Boardwalk Empire with 18, that focuses on the era of Prohibition, Saturday Night Live had 16 for Game of Thrones and 13 for 30 Rock.

The Kennedy’s a controversial sitcom that was dropped from the History Channel and then given a second life by ReelzChannel was nominated 10 times including for best miniseries.

However both Tom Wilkinson and Greg Kinnear were nominated for their roles, Katie Holmes who played the role of Jacqueline Kennedy was not. There are many familiar face as well that can win again like Nurse Jackie’s Edie Falco and Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory.

For Mad Men, Jon Hamm was nominated for the fourth time for lead actor and this time around the actor that beat him three previous times is not nominated because Breaking Bad took a break between seasons and Bryan Cranston was not eligible to be nominated. For his last season on The Office Steve Carell was nominated for best actor in a comedy marking the last chance he has to get the Emmy for being a clueless boss.

The victories were very worthy ones and come at a time when the gap between British and American television has grown ever wider. With productions like The Pacific, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire, American television producers throw boatloads of money at their TV, while the British set up leaves a very small budget by comparison.

For the sake of comparison, let’s refer to the cost of a single episode for the wonderful British period piece, Cranford. This series was one of the most expensively produced in recent history of the BBC. At the same time an episode of the HBO series, The Wire, cost much more to make than Cranford. Yet, The Wire was cheaply produced by American television standards.

Still, British TV prevails where it can, and all the International Emmy winners are to be congratulated.

Ultimate Fasionista was Nicola Roberts who recently started a make-up line for fair skin. Karen Gillan, of Doctor Who fame, was declared the ultimate in UK TV actresses.

A bit of a shocker was that Christine Bleakley was announced ultimate TV Host, despite the fact that Daybreak’s ratings continue to plummet and it is now reported that less than 530,000 people watch. That’s only 33 per cent of the total viewers for rival, Breakfast.

Sheridan Smith, formerly of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, was Ultimate Theatre Star for her part in Legally Blonde. Alexandra Burke was voted in as UK Music Star.

The panel of judges featured Mel B, Reggie Yates, Kimberley Walsh, and Karren Brady.

The event was held at London’s Banqueting House.

All in attendance were reported to have had a fine evening and the award winners were a ready combination of surprised, thrilled, and honoured.

An acknowledgment was also made to note the bravery and accomplishments of all of the UK’s non-celebrity women, as well.

Chairman of the Bafta TV committee, John Willis, called Cowell “one of the most brilliant entertainment producers of our time”. Willis cited the role Mr. Cowell played in bringing new and exciting talent to the attention of the British public, and his major contribution to TV entertainment on Saturday nights.

Since rising to fame in Britain with his role as a judge on ‘Pop Idol’ and in the U.S. with ‘American Idol’, the TV mogul has made his fortune by giving unknown performers a chance at celebrity, and his sometimes biting but always entertaining commentary on their performances. Now he says he wants to enlarge his participant base as well as his audience by taking on the other 65 countries that have bought his format. His new show would have the winners from each country competing for global fame.

The winner of Saturday night’s finale of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ was a group of acrobats called Spelbound, and members of the troupe told reporters that they had offers to perform in Las Vegas, and dreams of performing in the 2016 Olympics due to recognition on the show.

There is no question that Simon Cowell knows how to attract and hold an audience. His current shows are the most watched in all of British television, and there’s no reason to think a global approach will not be just as popular.
